How to Find Your Credit Card Billing Cycle and Bill Generation Date

Published 7 min readWealth Mutant Team

To find your credit card billing cycle you need just one date: the statement date, which Indian banks often call the bill generation date. Your cycle starts the day after a statement date and ends on the following one, so once you know that day of the month, you know every cycle on the card.

The date is printed on every statement, it sits in your card's app, and the card company will tell you if you ask. Here is where to look, what to do if you have no statement yet, and how to turn that one date into the full cycle.

How to find your credit card billing cycle on a statement

Open your most recent statement, paper or PDF, and look near the top. You are looking for one of these labels:

  • Statement date or statement closing date
  • Closing date, common on US cards
  • Bill date or bill generation date, common in India
  • Statement period or billing period, shown as 2 dates with a dash between them

The last one gives you the whole cycle at once; any of the others gives you its end. In the US every statement has to show it: the rules list "the closing date of the billing cycle and the account balance outstanding on that date" among what a card statement must disclose.

A sample statement header with 3 fields marked: statement date 23 March, the cycle's last day; statement period 24 February to 23 March, the whole cycle; and the payment due date. Below, this cycle and the next, 24 March to 23 April.
Labels differ from card to card, and the date you need sits near the top. With the 23rd in hand, each cycle runs from the 24th of one month to the 23rd of the next.

While you have the statement open, note the payment due date beside it. The gap between the 2 is your card's own number, and it barely changes from month to month.

How to find your credit card billing cycle without a statement

In the card's app or online banking. Look under statements, billing or card details. Many apps show the next statement date or "next closing date" on the card's main screen, and some Indian banks' apps have a section for the billing cycle itself, since the RBI lets cardholders change it.

In the welcome letter or card agreement. A new card's paperwork usually names the statement date, even before the first statement exists.

From the card company. If the paperwork doesn't say, Chase's advice holds for any card: you can call the customer service line to find out. The number is on the back of the card.

From the "statement ready" message. If your statements come by email or as an app notification, the day that message arrives each month is your statement date, or a day or two after it.

From your own records. If you have a few months of purchases written down, the dates on which old bills started and stopped show the pattern too, though the card company's answer is the one to trust.

What "bill generation date" means, and how often the bill is generated

The bill generation date is the statement date under another name: the day the card company closes the month's spending and produces the bill. It happens once per billing cycle, which in practice means monthly, landing on roughly the same date every time.

The Reserve Bank of India describes the billing cycle as "the regular length of time between closing dates of two consecutive bills raised by the card-issuer", so "after how many days is the bill generated" has a short answer: about 30, counted from the last one. Your first bill on a new card arrives at the end of the first cycle.

In India the payment is then due at least a fortnight later: card companies must give customers "at least one fortnight" to pay before interest starts. In the US the minimum is 21 days.

Turn the date into your full cycle

Say your statement says the bill was generated on the 23rd. Then:

CycleBill generatedCovers purchases made
This one23 March24 February to 23 March
The next23 April24 March to 23 April
The one after23 May24 April to 23 May

Every purchase falls into exactly one of those windows, and that window's bill is the one it appears on. A purchase on 23 March is on March's bill; one on 24 March waits for April's. If you have more than one card, each has its own date, so repeat this for each and keep the dates side by side.

If your date is the 29th, 30th or 31st, some months don't have it, and card companies handle that in their own ways: compare 2 or 3 past bills to see what yours does.

Found it? From here a personal finance app can do the counting, and Wealth Mutant is ours. Find your billing cycle in 2 minutes

  1. Open your latest statement or the card's app

Either one has the date. A PDF statement in your email works as well as paper.

  2. Find the statement date

Look for statement date, closing date, bill date or bill generation date, or a statement period with 2 dates.

  3. Work out the cycle

The cycle runs from the day after one statement date to the next one. Write the day of the month down.

  4. Note the due date and the gap

Your statement prints the due date too, and the number of days between the 2 dates stays about the same each month.

What is the bill generation date of a credit card?

It is the statement date: the day each month when the card company closes your spending for the cycle and produces the bill. Purchases after it go on the next bill.

How do I know my credit card billing cycle?

Find your statement date on a statement, in the card's app or by asking the card company. The cycle runs from the day after one statement date to the next.

Is the bill generation date the same as the due date?

No. The bill is generated first; the due date comes later. In India it must leave you at least a fortnight to pay before interest starts, and in the US at least 21 days.

Can I change my credit card billing cycle?

In India, the Reserve Bank's rules give every cardholder the option to change it at least once. Elsewhere it is up to the card company, so ask.

What changes once you have the date

Your card stops running on dates you have to guess. You know which bill each purchase lands on, when the next one closes, and how long you will have to pay it.

For what each date means and how the interest-free days fit between them, read the credit card billing cycle in full, and for setting the card up in the app, how credit card accounts work. The tour runs from the dashboard to the 9 levels of the Mutation Path.
