Wealth Mutant is a personal finance app that runs this same sum on your own income, month after month, and shows what you spend in hours of your life.
See pricingHow the sum works
Your rate is your income divided by every hour in a year: 365 days × 24 hours = 8,760 hours. The hours you sleep count as well, because the money keeps moving at night.
A price divided by that rate is what it costs in hours of your life, rounded to the nearest hour. That is the whole sum. It tells you what something costs in time, not whether it is worth it.
An example
Say you take home 36,000 a year and you are looking at something that costs 1,200. Every hour counts, so your rate is 36,000 ÷ 8,760 = 4.11 an hour. The price is 1,200 ÷ 4.11 = 292 hours, about 12 days of your life.
At that rate, 10 hours of your life are worth 41, 40 hours (almost 2 days) are worth 164, and 2,000 hours (about 12 weeks) are worth 8,220.
What the app does with your own numbers
Wealth Mutant does the same conversion on your last 12 finished months, once you have 3 of them. Your rate sits on the dashboard, right under your net worth (what you own minus what you owe). In Insights, each spending category shows what it cost you in hours. And when you plan a purchase in What If, it is priced in hours of your life before you commit to it.
The help page on Money Per Hour covers how the 12-month window works and when the numbers first appear.
